ANTIQUARIANS HOROLOGISTS ACCREDITED VALUERS For those whose acquaintance we have not yet made, MENTINK & ROEST has been restoring and dealing in antique horology and barometers for over 25 years. During that time we have regularly exhibit at the major international Antique fairs. The TEFAF Maastricht and PAN Amsterdam fair are two were we continue to take part in and where we assist with the vetting of exhibits. We have helped build some of the foremost clock collections and with the loyal support and patronage of our clients, collectors and museum authorities we have been privileged to handle some of the most important antique clocks in the world. Always in search of fine examples, we welcome enquiries for both the purchase and disposal of individual items or complete collections. Antiquarians, Horologists, Accredited Valuers. As well as including some of our current stock, these pages illustrate some of the most important historical timepieces to have passed through our hands in recent years. More than two thousand years ago the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans obtained approximate time from primitive water clocks and sun dials, some of which survive today. Progress in the first 1400 years AD was relatively slow. The sand glass and the sun dial were employed throughout the Dark and Middle Ages, until the first beautiful mechanical clocks were developed in the late 15th century. The next milestone was reached in the second half of the 17th century when Huygens from the Netherlands introduced the pendulum and balance spring, which' brought about a new age of excellence in horology. The collaboration between clockmakers and cabinetmakers together with the silver and goldsmiths, resulted in beautifully designed and well proportioned masterpieces.
