NICOLAAS WEYLANDT AMSTERDAM. A Dutch early eighteenth-century eight-day going longcase clock signed on the dial ‘Nicolaas Weylandt Amsterdam’, c. 1740. The case hood is typical for the period with an elaborate caddy, sound-frets and carvings at the top. The hood is flanked by pillars with brass capitals and basements and surmounted by three vase finials on pedestals. The oak case has a rectangular base with moulding and is veneered with beautifully figured walnut. The whole stands on bun feet. The arched brass dial has a raised silvered brass Roman chapter ring, moon-phase, moon age and ‘high water Amsterdam’ apertures above the XII, and a seconds ring and date aperture above the middle. There is an engraved cartouche around the day and sign-of-the-day aperture, and typical ‘four-seasons’ spandrels embellish the corners of the dial. The time is indicated by two pierced blued-steel hands. The week-going movement has anchor escapement with seconds pendulum, alarm and Dutch rack striking on two bells of different pitch. • Nicolaas Weylandt was recorded to be active in the first half of the 18th century.
