Index No. A8442 Triple Cased Quarter Repeater and Chatelaine A fine mid 18th Century quarter repeating English verge in gold repousse pair cases and protective outer with gilt metal chatelaine and fitted case. Full plate fire gilt movement with signed and numbered gilt dust cover, turned baluster pillars. Pierced and engraved cock, pierced and engraved foot and plate for the silver regulator disc. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Plain three arm gilt balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Push pendant quarter repeating on a bell in the back of the case. White enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, fine pierced gilt hands. Gold (20 or 22 carat) pair cases, the inner pierced and engraved to allow the bell to sound clearly. Gold repousse outer cased pierced chased and engraved with a scene of Alexander crowning Roxanna on the back. Glazed third protective gilt case covered in shagreen decorated with gilt pique pins. Gilt metal chatelaine decorated on the buckle and central links with various scenes. Four ancillary chains each with a hinged loop secured by a threaded collar. One has a gilt crank key, another a gold heart with a hinged steel hook. The other two have stone set gold seals one carved with a heart pierced by three arrows and the second a bust of a gentleman with what appears to be a comet behind him. Unusual shaped fitted case of black shagreen lined with purple silk. Signed Benjn Sidey Jun London Circa 1760 Diameter [repousse case] 49 mm Depth 17 mm It is rare to find a watch complete with its chatelaine and all accessories in such excellent condition. The larger seal is interesting as on Christmas Day 1758 Johann Georg Palitzsch, a German astronomer became famous when he was the first to see Halley's Comet after Halley had predicted its return.
