W. SKILMORE, LONDON. AN OLIVEWOOD OYSTER VENEERED MONTH DURATION MARQUETRY LONGCASE CLOCK. CIRCA 1690. This fine clock, standing just 6' 5.5" high, has a movement with five attractively turned pinned plate pillars and pinned dial feet. External count wheel strike is employed and the steelwork is well finished. The 11" square dial has flower and cherub spandrels to the four corners, a raised silvered chapter ring with half hour marks and quartering on its inner aspect. The dial centre is well matted and has a seconds ring and date aperture. There are substantial brass cased weights, one of which is a later replacement. The hood, which was originally "lift up" but now slides forward, has no mask. It has an ebony mould to the front and sides of the top and another ebony mould below the fret, which is original. The sides are glazed and spiral twist columns fitted. The mould immediately beneath the hood, which is convex, is veneered with olivewood. The sides of the trunk and base are decorated with olivewood oyster veneers surrounded by a band of fruitwood. The trunk door has panels of floral marquetry laid on a dark ground and surrounded by a line of boxwood. Between the panels are olivewood oyster veneers and the half round border is ebonised. To the centre of the door is an oval lenticle with an ebonised border. The base of the clock, which rests on bun feet, has a floral marquetry panel surrounded by a boxwood line and olivewood crossbanding. Height: 6' 5 .5" (197 cms)
