German marine chronometer by Krille and Kessels Altona (Hamburg), c. 1860 Dial: Silvered brass dial. Roman hour, Arabic five-minute and minute divisions. Two subsidiary dials: the upper one an up-and-down dial with a scale 0 - 56, indicating the state of winding, the lower one a seconds ring; golden hands: signed and numbered KRILLE KESSELS ALTONA NACHFOLGER No 1596 Movement: Brass. Single barrel wound from beneath. Chain fusee, maintaining power; Earnshaw spring detent escapement. Cut bimetallic compensation balance with helical spring. Duration: Two days. Case: Gimballed brass bowl with seperate dust cover, mounted in a three-tier rosewood case with external brass drop handles. Dimensions: 16.2 x 15.5 x 15.5 cm.
