FRENCH MARINE BAROMETER A rare French marine barometer with a solid mahogany case, c. 1810 (Empire period). The case of the clock is attached to the wall by a support that includes gimballed suspension and spring damping to be independent of wave influences. The barometer is provided with a Torricelli tube with leather-based cistern and screw for transport purposes. The atmospheric pressure is indicated on silvered brass register plates. The maker has signed the barometer at the bottom of the register plates in the following manner: MANGAVEL BORDEAUX The air pressure is indicated in French inches (26-29). The barometer scale also indicates the weather conditions (left). Furthermore, it is provided with a silvered brass vernier scale for accurate reading, which is operated from the back with a knob.
