A rare and very fine Restauration gilt bronze Lampe Bouillotte, the turned part-gadrooned shaft surmounted by a gadrooned rim and a square steel stem with adjustable spool-shaped clasp and lock, issuing three scrolling and pierced arabesque branches, each terminating in an eagle head supporting a gadrooned drip-pan and vase-shaped nozzle, surmounted by a further adjustable spool-shaped clasp with an arrow-shaped lock issuing three branches, each terminating in a swan head and a spreading cylindrical tôle peinte adjustable shade with laurel wreath ring-handle, on a dished and part-gadrooned foot with pierced dished bowl with interlaced trellis-fret and an everted gadrooned rim Paris, date circa 1820 Height 65 cm. An extremely similar Lampe Bouillotte was owned by King Louis Philippe at Château de Neuilly (sold Christie’s London, 12th June 1997, lot 113). The latter was of very similar style although the three branches and nozzles differed slightly in that each branch featured a swan head flanking the central shaft and terminated in a spreading imbricated drip-pan below a cylindrical nozzle and further drip-pan. The Château de Neuilly was acquired in 1819 by the duc d’Orléans, who later reigned as King Louis Philippe (1830-48). During his reign the architect Pierre Fontaine redecorated his residence, at which time the original fondeur’s mark on the lamp was altered to include the king’s initials. Sadly following the July Revolution of 1848 the Château de Neuilly was razed to the ground; the mob destroyed certain works while other pieces were either sold or dispersed elsewhere. |
