A very fine pair of early eighteenth century Italian terracotta putti symbolising Farming and Fishing both standing on a rectangular base, Farming with a corn-sheaf garland in his hair holding a scythe in his left hand and a strop for sharpening his blade in his right with a mill wheel behind. Fishing with a foliate garland in his hair, a bag slung over his shoulder grasping the tail of a dolphin with his foot resting on its head Italian, date circa 1720 Height 80 cm. each. This charming pair of putti symbolise the harvest of the land and sea, namely Farming and Fishing. The modelling of the figures is similar in style to the work of the celebrated Italian Baroque sculptor Alessandro Algardi (1596-1654), whose models were reproduced during the subsequent centuries. |
