A very beautiful and fine quality Louis XV Transition Louis XVI gilt bronze mounted inlaid marquetry amaranth, bois de rose, sycamore, and stained wood commode stamped L BOUDIN and JME, decorated overall with a floral trellis-pattern, the shaped rectangular brèche d’Alep marble top above three frieze drawers ornamented with trellis parquetry and each with a ring handle, above two long drawers each with ring handles, the lower drawer decoration divided into three panels with geometric borders à la Grec, the two outer panels each decorated with an urn with flaming finial within a flower filled trellis, the central panel inlaid with a floral trellis and similarly decorated on each of the sides, the canted angles headed by a ram’s head and scrolling acanthus mount above hipped cabriole legs headed by gilt mounts terminating in acanthus wrapped lion paw sabots Paris, date circa 1765 Height 88 cm, length 131 cm, depth 64 cm. Léonard Boudin (1735-1807) is celebrated for his remarkably accomplished, innovative and dramatic marquetry – a skill he most likely acquired when working for Pierre Migeon II (1701-58), during his early career. Boudin later practised as a marchand-ébéniste, retailing both his own works and those by fellow colleagues. Floral, figurative and parquetry inlays were among his specialities. Among other related Transition commodes from his oeuvre is one ornamented solely with parquetry and trellis patterns and another with an urn and floral-filled basket, illustrated respectively in Pierre Kjellberg, “Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle”, 1998, pp. 92 and 97, pl. A. For more information on Boudin’s career and work, see p. ?? (old no 93).
