A rare and good Dutch ebony basket top table clock, by Pieter Klock Amsterdam, circa 1690 The square brass dial with matted centre and cherub spandrels, an engraved silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals and five minute marking, finely pierced iron hands and engraved silvered alarm disc, date aperture below XII, day and sign of the day above VI, lever for strike/silent above XII. The 8 day two train spring driven fusee movement with verge escapement, knopped and ringed pillars, well engraved back plate and apron with scrolls and a squirrel, rack hour striking on a bell, alarm on a bell separately mounted on the back plate, pull repeating. The moulded ebony veneered case with urn finials and foliate pierced gilt brass basket top surmounted by a handle, side frets, square glazed front door, moulded plinth raised on bun feet. The maker: Pieter Klock or Klok, Amsterdam. Born in Uithoorn in 1665, died in Amsterdam March 10 1744. On July 27th 1703 the banns register mentions the notice of marrige between Peter Klock van den Uythoorn horlogimaker, 38 yrs (?), Kalverstraat (?) and Maria Kramer 20 yrs. Peter was a clockmaker and paintings dealer. In 1716 he made a list of "good men" at the request of the city council; a register of the major and best watchmakers. In 1704 such a register was made by Steven Huygens in which Peter Klock was listed as last one. His workshop was at the Singel and later in the Kalverstraat near the Osjessluis.
