A late 18th c. single draw handheld English refracting telescope (spy glass) with mahogany covered octagonal outer tube and negative eyepiece. Signed on the lens shutter: NAIRNE LONDON. 

The maker: Nairne, Edward, Cornhill. Royal Exchange, London, England.  Edward Nairne (1726 - 1 Sept. 1806) was English optician and scientific instrument maker. Nairne was born in Sandwich, England. He was apprenticed to the optician Matthew Loft in 1741 and established his own business at 20 Cornhill in London after Loft's death in 1748. In 1774 he took his apprentice Thomas Blunt into partnership, a relationship that lasted until 1793 when Blunt opened his own shop at 22 Cornhill.

Een uit twee delen bestaande Engelse, mahoniehouten en messing, telescopische verrekijker met twee lenzenstelsels “ refractor” de  lichtstralen worden gemanipuleerd door breking. De kijker heeft een negatieve lens als oculair en geeft een rechtopstaand beeld, de beeldkwaliteit en maximale vergroting zijn echter minder dan met een positief oculair. Telescopische” in de betekenis van uitschuifbaar komt  hier vandaan.   Lengte: 26,5 cm en 45,5 mm Koker octogonaal 31 mm.
