A fine and beautifully engraved Nikolaus Rugendas gilt brass and silver Augsburg equinoctial dial, German, late 17th c. signed Nicolaus Rugendas Augspurg 48. The octagonal dial with silver compass rose showing a magnetic variation of west 8.4°. There is a silver scale (0-65°) with brass pointer to set the local latitude (Gradus Poli) automatically by a pushing knob. The base plate, standing on three adjustable feet, mounted with hinged plumb-bob support and foldable hour ring and gnomon.

Dimensions L.70  W.69 mm. H (collapsed) 22mm.

The maker: Rugendas is a renowned family of three generations of painters, draughtsmen, engravers and instrument makers. Nikolaus I (1585-1658) master 1616, Nikolaus II (1619-1694) master 1662, Nilokaus III (1665-1745) master 1699. We owe them the invention of this 'Augsburg type' pocket sundials. Their work was of the highest quality. It is often difficult to distinguish their instruments. 

Rugendas dials can be found in the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford, British Museum, Deutsches museum Munich, Whipple museum Cambridge, Zurich observatorium.

Een zeer fijne vroege, eind 17 de eeuw, mechanische equinoctiale zonnewijzer. Eind 17 de eeuw. Duitse zilveren en verguld messing, octogonale mechanische reis- zakzonnewijzer met kompas. Instelbare gnomon. Voorzien van schietlood inrichting. Het geheel rust op drie pootjes. Gesigneerd aan de onderkant:  Nicolaus Rugendas  Augspurg 48 Het mechanisme kan de gebruiker vooraf instellen op een bepaalde latitude met de wijzer op de gradenring die loopt van 0 tot 65 graden. Door op een knop te drukken springt uren en halve uren ring  automatisch naar de juiste positie. Daarna stelt men de gnomon omhoog. Een ander voorbeeld van deze zonnewijzer is in het Museum van de History of Science, Oxford. c.1700. Maten:   lengte  70 mm   breedte  69 mm  hoogte ingeklapt  22 mm.
