A very rare and fine pair of eighteenth century cast silver candlesticks by Christianus Drentwett the Younger, each with an octagonal vase-shaped socket on a double knopped stern on a spreading spiral fluted shaped circular base and ornamented overall with shell-shaped bands Augsburg, Germany, dated 1781-83 Fully hallmarked. Height 23 cm, width at base 15 cm each. Christianus Drentwett the Younger (d. 1801) belonged to an important family from Augsburg of over 30 master gold and silversmiths who were patronised by monarchy, nobility and wealthy bourgeoisie from all over Europe. The founder of the dynasty, Balduin Drentwett (1545-1627) worked for a number of courts, notably the Margraves of Baden- Baden. Like other members of the family, Christianus Drentwett, who became a master in 1754, supplied many distinguished patrons. Among them was Catherine the Great of Russia, for whom he made a 32-part silver soup service, dated 1757-59, which is now in the National Museum of Nürnberg. He also supplied a silver tureen of1757-9 to Graf van der Groeben and a circular silver plate of1789-91 to Graf Oberndorff Edingen, Other pieces by him included a large gilded toilette service for Schloss Detmold and a gilded tureen and plateau, from the Freiherr Von Stumm Holzhausen collection. The Pitti Palace, Florence owns a silver basin and jug by him and the Kassel Museum houses several small tumblers dating from 1767-69. Like other members of his family, Drentwett made a number of pieces of church plate in addition to domestic silver. These items included a silver candlestick in Reiche Kapelle, Munich and a silver jug of 1797 for Peterskirche, Püchau.
