Pierre Kjellberg, “Le Mobilier Français de XVIIIe. Siècle”, 1989, p. 807, pl. D, illustrating one of a pair of similar square back fauteuils by Claude Sené II.

Claude Sené II belonged to the third generation of maître-menuisiers; he was the son of Claude Sené and younger brother of the Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené, one of the most important Louis XVI period chair-makers after Georges Jacob. In many respects Claude’s chairs were very similar to those by his brother - they were elegant, well designed and had delicate shapes but because the majority were not destined for the royal court they usually had simpler decoration. Although Claude received some commissions from the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne, he mainly worked for the aristocracy and privileged few.

He was accepted as a maître-menuisier in 1769 and appears to have worked with his father until 1780 when he took over control of the workshop. He worked from Faubourg-Saint-Denis until he had to file for bankruptcy in 1783. One year later he resumed activity and installed himself in rue de Cléry, close to his elder brother but his production ceased with the Revolution. He specialized in the production of fauteuils, both with square backs but perhaps more often with shield-shaped backs. A number were gilded or painted and some produced in mahogany. He is known to have made swivelling office armchairs with console feet similar to those by Georges Jacob.
