44 wall182 Contact: Bob Gardner. Email: rc.gardner@ntlworld.com An English tavern clock by William Underwood of Highworth, London c1775. These large clocks, about 55 inches high, were the first clocks provided for public use. They were used in coaching inns, which were stages on the route of horse drawn coaches running to a timetable; hence the need for everyone in the tavern to know the time. The case is in original condition and had some gentle restoration eighteen months ago. The five wheel movement was overhauled at the same time.
