I became interested in clocks at a very young age but it was not until 1985 that I actually converted my interest into practice. It was Mario Crijns who gave me this opportunity and I learned the tricks of the trade in his workshop where I worked alongside Peter Zwaanenburg and Niko van Keep. I progressed quickly, helped by my engineering background and deep motivation. I was soon restoring many different types of clocks for the trade and for private clients while at the same time working at my day job as a translator. I also assisted Mario at antique fairs and my knowledge of clocks improved culminating in the editorship of H. M. Vehmeyer's Clocks - Their Origin and Development 1320 - 1880 (2004), which I consider to be a lifetime's achievement. Some years later I also edited Prof. R. Plomp’s book, Early French Pendulum Clocks, 1658 - 1700,Schiedam, 2009 and have been the editor of the Horological Desk Diary since its advent in 2010.
In 2006/07 I spent a year at West Dean College where I further honed my practical skills in ideal circumstances and achieved the professional status I needed. In addition to clock restoration, I continue with my textual work ranging from writing and editing to translating, mainly technical or horological texts into Dutch and English. My other source languages include French and German. |
